Battling Cancer

On recommendation from well-intentioned friends, Ah Kow has been cleaning lemongrass, or serai as it is known here, cutting and boiling it with tap water that has flowed over a bio disc to infuse it with 'scalar' energy which rejuvenates molecular structures in all liquids.

Lemongrass is supposed to rid him of flatulence and nausea; it is also a natural diuretic.

The disc, made of 13 engineered natural minerals and fused using nano technology, and bought at great cost in Australia by his brother (about Aus 600 dollars, if I remembered correctly), claims to improve energy levels, enhance the immune system, rejuvenate cells, and increase blood oxygen level.

He was also advised to take raw asparagus grounded into a paste to rid his body of the side effects of several chemotherapy sessions, and that, he has been religiously following.

Of course there is no proof that such a regime of treatment could cure his cancer, but apparently it seems to work for him as he is alert, stronger, not easily fatigued, and optimistic.

Fruit Codes

I was buying some apples when I stumbled upon stickers on some apples that got me puzzled; it used to be that fruits, particularly imported ones carry labels or stickers of their producers. However, this time I noticed some numbers on the label. A google search revealed that these numbers are codes assigned to the ways fruits are grown.

Here is the info:

  • Conventional fruit labels: 4 digits and does not start with 9. They start mostly with the digit 4. The apple above is one conventionally grown with herbicides and fertilizers
  • Organic fruit labels: five digits and start with the number 9, say for example 99222
  • Genetically modified fruit: starts with the number 8, say for example 89222.
So, folks check your labels when you buy your fruits.

Yellow Noodles Alert

I have been consuming yellow noodles regularly: mee goreng, laksa mee, curry mee, fried mee, prawn mee, mee soups etc...etc, as a staple food. And now they tell me it is dangerous to my health. It is said that it contains a preservative, boric acid which taken over long term, could lead to testicular atrophy. It is also reported that some samples of the yellow noodles also contained e-coli, a bacterium that causes intestinal and urinary tract infections. I am beginning to wonder what is safe to eat anymore?

Secrets To Sexual Health

Many ageing males would be green with envy with 54 year old Abu Bakar’s undoubtedly sexual prowess. Having fathered 25 children, he hopes to round it up to 40 children by taking a fourth wife 30 years his junior, with the consent of his other three wives of course. The secret to his stamina? Bathing with water in the morning by pouring a pail of water on the right leg first before washing other parts of the body.

“This technique is deemed a must for those with several wives,” he said.

Those of you out there, I mean you ageing acrobats, should feed your Viagra to the chickens and start bathing your right leg. Why the right and not the left leg, I wonder. It would be enlightening to hear his explanation.

Star Fruit Danger

Remember the recent news report on a Malaysian who was in a coma in a hospital in China after eating star fruit? This is the report on the danger of eating star fruit for people with kidney problems.

STAR FRUIT CAN BE POISONOUS FOR KIDNEY PATIENTS

BY AMANDA LEE

KUALA LUMPUR: ALL IT TAKES IS ONE FRUIT OR 100ML OF ITS JUICE AND THE ORDINARILY HARMLESS STAR FRUIT BECOMES POISON IN A MATTER OF HOURS FOR KIDNEY PATIENTS.

University Malaya Medical Centre consultant nephrologist Prof Dr Tan Si-Yen said this was what had happened to Tang Gon Seang in China.

The 66-year-old, who has been suffering from a kidney ailment, was in Shenzhen visiting his son when fell into a coma on March 29 after eating star fruits. 'Star fruits contain a neurotoxin which is not present in other fruits. It affects the brain and nerves. In healthy persons, the kidneys filter it out.
'In kidney patients, it cannot be removed and worsens their condition,' he said.

More than 10 other patients in the hospital suffered the same condition after consuming star fruits. Two of them died.

After discovering the star fruit connection, Tang has been
undergoing dialysis.

His brother-in-law Teoh Thian Lye, 55, confirmed that Tang had been on medication for kidney problems for three years.

The family sought the help of MCA Public Complaints and Services Department head Datuk Michael Chong to transfer Tang back to Malaysia as the family could not afford the hospital bill of RM1,000-RM2,000 a day in intensive care.

According to Dr Tan, there was little awareness of this relatively new discovery and no local cases yet. 'The public must be alert to reactions to star fruit. Look out for initial symptoms including hiccups, numbness and weakness, and neurological symptoms including confusion, agitation and epileptic fits,' he said. 'The risk of death is high,' he added.

Plastics In Pisang Goreng

Although this particular piece of 'news' appeared in December last year, it has been making its rounds these last two weeks judging from the large number of blogs in Malaysia and Singapore that commented on the issue. Some even claimed that there were eye-witnesses to the dangerous, unethical practice. Exposing plastics to boiling water is dangerous; what more to boiling oil.

Study found exposure to boiling water released environmental estrogen 55 times faster

WEDNESDAY, Jan. 30 (HealthDay News) -- Exposing plastic bottles to boiling water can release a potentially harmful chemical 55 times faster than normal, new research suggests.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is found in the plastics that make up water bottles, baby bottles, and other food and drink packaging. It acts as an environmental estrogen and can disrupt the function of the endocrine system (a system of ductless glands that regulates bodily functions via hormones secreted into the bloodstream).

The Beijing Condom Fashion Show

China : Unique fashion show to spread AIDS awareness July 31, 2007

A condom fashion show was held at the 4th China Reproductive Health New Technologies and Products Expo. The first ever such fashion show by China's largest condom manufacturer, Guilin Latex Factory featured wedding gowns, dresses, bikinis and other products made from condoms.

For a country where only a decade ago, the subject of sex was taboo, it seems to have been swept by a sexual revolution of sorts. The pictures below, taken from various sources speak for themselves.

Warning! Rat Urine on Soda Can Top

Meeky received another email on 2 July 2007. The subject is the deadly Leptospirosis (lep-to-spi-ro-sis)
disease.

LEPTOSPIROSIS (DEADLY) VERY IMPORTANT PLEASE READ AND FOLLOW..

This incident happened recently in North Texas. A woman went boating one Sunday taking with her some cans of coke which she put into the refrigerator of the boat. On Monday she was taken to the hospital and placed in ICU. She died on Wednesday. The autopsy concluded she died of Leptospirosis. This was traced to the can of coke she drank from without using a glass. Tests showed that the can was infected by dried rat urine and hence the disease Leptospirosis.Rat urine contains toxic and deathly substances. It is highly recommended to thoroughly wash the upper part of soda cans before drinking out of them. The cans are typically stocked in warehouses and transported straight to the shops without being cleaned.A study at NYCU showed that the tops of soda cans are more contaminated than public toilets (i.e).. full of germs and bacteria. So wash them with water before putting them to the mouth to avoid any kind of fatal accident.

Please forward this message to all the people you care about. (I JUST DID)

It is yet another urban legend similar to the one that warns consumers of the danger of using microwaveable plastics and plastic bottles. (See meeky-meeky.blogspot.com “Microwave plastics a health threat?”)
The version above first appeared in March 2006. A much earlier version, containing essentially the same warning appeared on 25 September 2002:

Subject: FW: Coke anyone?

Charming........

This incident happened recently in Belgium.

A woman went boating one Sunday, taking with her some cans of coke which she put in the refrigerator of the boat. On Monday she was taken into ICU and on Wednesday she died.

The autopsy revealed a certain Leptospirosis caused by the can of coke from which she had drunk straight out of, not using a glass. A test showed that the can was infected by dried rat urine and hence the disease Leptospirosis.

Rat urine contains toxic and deathly substances. It is highly recommended to wash thoroughly the upper part of soda cans before drinking out of them as they have been stocked in warehouses and transported straight to the shops without with being cleaned. A study in Spain showed that the tops of soda cans are more contaminated then public toilets i.e full of germs and bacteria. So to wash them with water is advised before putting it to the mouth to avoid any kind of fatal accident.

Facts about Leptospirosis from the Centres for Disease control and prevention

What is leptospirosis?

It’s a bacterial disease that afflicts humans and animals. In humans the symptoms include : high fever, headache, chills, muscle pain, and vomiting. Other symptoms may include jaundice, red eyes, stomachache, diarrhea or rash. If untreated, the patient may develop kidney damage, meningitis, liver failure and respiratory prblems. Death from the disease is rare.

How do people get leptospirosis?

A person usually contracts the disease from exposure to water contaminated with the urine of infected animals such as cattle, pigs, horses, dogs, rodents (including rats) and wild animals.

Humans are infected when they come into contact with water, food or soil containing urine from these infected animals. It can occur when a person swallows contaminated food or water or through skin contact, especially through the eyes or nose, or broken skin. The disease is not known to spread from person to person.

How long is it between the time of exposure and when people become sick?

The time between a person's exposure to a contaminated source and becoming sick is 2 days to 4 weeks. The illness lasts from a few days to 3 weeks or longer. Without treatment, recovery may take several months.

Where is leptospirosis found?

It is most common in temperate or tropical climates. Farmers, sewer workers, veterinarians, fish workers, dairy farmers are most exposed to the disease.

How is leptospirosis treated?
Leptospirosis is effectively treated with antibiotics.

Can leptospirosis be prevented?
Do not swim or wade in water that might be infected with animal urine. Those whose jobs expose them to the risk of infection should wear protective clothing or footwear. The risk of acquiring leptospirosis can be greatly reduced by not swimming or wading in water that might be contaminated with animal urine.

The Leptospirosis Information Centre has this to say on the origin and truth of the email:

“The email evolves over time, and currently (March 2006) we are seeing a rise in circulation in the USA, referring to deaths in several states. They are entirely untrue and have been used to package viruses and trojan malware. If you receive one of these messages, please - delete it and ignore what it says. You are more at risk of being hit by lightning while riding a camel than contracting leptospirosis from a drinks container.

Official position of the LIC: While there is a theoretical risk of human infection from residual rat urine on cans or bottles, the statistical risk is extremely small. Leptospira require constant immersion in water to survive, and so drying of the surface for any length of time will permanently kill the bacteria. Given that drinking containers are non-porous, surface moisture dries very quickly and cannot possibly contaminate the contents. Drinking from a can or bottle that has been exposed to rat urine presents a risk in theory only. There are no reported cases in the literature of human infection being unequivocally traced to cans or bottles and no medical studies have been performed into leptospira on drinks containers, or into the relative bacterial levels of drinks containers and public toilets. The emails usually report a study by 'NYCU'. There is no such University (it is an acronym for News You Can Use) and is in no way connected to New York University”.

Microwave plastics a health threat?

Meeky recently received an email flier warning him not to use microwaveable plastic containers in microwave ovens and not to put plastic bottles of water in the freezer. The flier purportedly originated from a newsletter from John Hopkins Hospital, USA. So he decided to verify the contents and discovered that another version containing essentially the same information was already in circulation since Feb 2004. The flier he had received:

CANCER UPDATE FROM JOHN HOPKINS HOSPITAL

PLEASE READ
1. No plastic containers in micro.
2. No water bottles in freezer.
3. No plastic wrap in microwave.

Johns Hopkins has recently sent this out in its newsletters. This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well. Dioxin chemicals cause cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic.
Recently, Dr. Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers.

This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.

Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead.

This is an article that should be sent to anyone important in your life. Hope you found it to be informative.

May be, he thought, he could devise a small test so readers can gauge their level of awareness of foods and of food preparation that can cause cancer. This was what he came up with:

Read the statements below and state whether the statements are TRUE or FALSE. If you aren't sure, abstain from answering.

1) Cancer feeds on sugar. By removing the supply, we cut off one important food source for the cancer cells.

2) Cancer feeds on milk. Casein, the main protein found in milk promotes the growth of cancer cells. By cutting off milk, we cut off one important source of food to the cancer cells.

3) Cancer cells thrive in an acidic environment. A diet rich in meat is acidic. By reducing meat intake, we reduce the risk of contracting cancer.

4) Eating more vegetables, whole grains and fruits puts the body in an alkaline environment.

5) Avoid coffee and tea. They cause cancer.

6) Avoid using plastic containers in microwave ovens. Toxins from plastics can leach into the food.

7) Eating salted fish and preserved vegetables can cause cancer.

8) Avoid putting water bottles in the freezer. Toxins from the bottles can leach into the water.

9) Avoid using plastic wrap in microwave ovens. Toxins from plastics can leach into the food.

10) The plastic wraps should not touch the food during microwave cooking or reheating.

ANSWERS

1. True. However, there are bad and good sugars. Bad sugars or simple sugars, are found in foods that do not offer any health benefits. Examples: fizzy drinks, sweets, cakes and refined grains( like the rice commonly consumed in Malaysia). Good sugars or complex carbohydrates are found in foods that contain vitamins, minerals, protein, and fibre. Examples: fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains. So the message is clear: avoid or reduce taking bad sugars.
2. Not Sure. Drinking more cow’s milk than we need can promote cancer growth, according to Dr. T. Collin Campbell, Emeritus professor from Cornell University, US. Dr. Campbell’s studies showed that safe proteins from plant foods such as wheat and soybeans are a better bet. Even at high doses, plant proteins will not cause cancer. From his epidemiological study in China, he concluded that the traditional Chinese diet of a little meat or milk and plenty of vegetables and fruits help to stave off cancer. He suggested that the intake of milk and meat products be reduced. (http://watersidesyndication.com/healthnews/?p=77)
However, the issue is not so clear-cut. According to a US consumer group, which has launched a campaign against the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for suppressing vital information, there has been indirect evidence that BGH (bovine growth hormone), a genetically engineered drug that has been given to 30 percent of U.S. dairy cows over the last five years to make them produce more milk, might contribute to breast and prostate cancer in humans. (http://www.purefood.org/rBGH/abcrbgh.cfm). Do we give our cows here the same stuff, Meeky wondered.

3. True. Eating too much red meat is linked with damage to the DNA which raises the risk of cancer. The risk of consuming too much meat with its attendant fat is well documented. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4662934.stm)

4. True. They have the ability to help prevent cancer and some can even help inhibit cancer cell growth or reduce tumor size. ( (http://www.cancure.org/cancer_fighting_foods.htm)

5. False. DRINKING coffee might have at least one health benefit: reducing your risk of liver cancer. Tea is known to contain antioxidants which prevent cancer cells from multiplying. Recent research even suggested that gout sufferers could benefit from coffee drinking as it lowers the uric acid level. (http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=mg18524885.700)

6. True. The consumption of salted fish and other salt-preserved foods, including eggs, leafy vegetables and roots, in early childhood has been found to increase the risk having nasopharyngeal cancer, commonly known as nose cancer (The cancer develops in an area in the back of the nose toward the base of skull) in Malaysian Chinese. Similarly, salted-fish consumption in early childhood has been associated with an unusually high occurance of this cancer in the boat communities of Hong Kong's harbours.

7, 8 and 9. False. Most of the plastics in wrapping or packaging foods do not contain the harmful dioxin toxins. Dioxins are only released at very high temperatures, usually above 371 degrees Celsius; they cannot be formed at room temperature or in freezing temperatures, says Machuga, Ph.D., a consumer safety officer in the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. He further added, “The FDA has seen no evidence that plastic containers or films contain dioxins and knows of no reason why they would.”

10. True. Microwave-safe plastic wrap should be placed loosely over food so that steam can escape, and should not directly touch your food. "Some plastic wraps have labels indicating that there should be a one-inch or greater space between the plastic and the food during microwave heating," says Machuga.
However, he admitted that substances used in making plastics do leach into food, but the levels are well within the safety limit.

If there is anything to be learnt from this health scare, it is that half-truths are more dangerous than lies for they wear many disguises, Meeky concluded. As for eating habits it is wise to heed the advice of a Hindu proverb: Even nectar is poison if taken to excess.
